Obtaining an Internship:

Choose an internship that interests you and will help you achieve future goals.

  1. Focus: Which area most interests you?
    • Prevention: opportunities to increase understanding about the workings of the family
    • Intervention: combined aspects of prevention and treatment to intercede prior to/in conjunction with clinical treatment
    • Treatment: work with individuals/families in crisis who are/will be clinically diagnosed and treated
  2. Location: Utah County, In-State (out of UtahCounty), National, International.
  3. Target Population: Which types of families/individuals would you be interested in working with for your internship?
    • Age: infants/toddlers, preschool, grade school, adolescents, young adults, adults, elderly
    • Status: disabled, substance abuse, various levels of educational and economic resources, prenatal, teen behavior challenges
    • Culture: sub-cultures in the U.S. or cultures abroad
  4. Time: Which semester is it best for you? How much time can you commit (credit hours)? Keep in mind that some agencies require a time commitment of more than one semester.

Locate placements that match your interests and needs. Choose 3 possible agencies:

    • Agency List (in the office and online http://familylife.byu.edu/internships)
    • SFLIFS Internship Fair
    • Flyers on the SFLIFS Bulletin Boards and in our Agency Information Binder
    • The Phone Book (for the location/agency of your choice)

*If the agency you choose is not on our Agency List, the Internship Coordinator must clear it prior to your application for credit. The agency must complete a University Contract. Experiences should be relevant to the academic discipline.
  1. Apply for and secure an internship. You do not need to talk to Dr. Magarrell or her assistants until you have secured your placement at an internship experience provider.
    1. Find out as much as you can about the 3 placement opportunities you have chosen. Look for:
      • History and reputation of the organization
      • Quality of past student experiences
      • Hands-on skills and tasks involved
    2. Apply, Interview, and follow-up with agencies (app. requirements vary with each organization).
    3. Finalize the time-frame and duties of your internship with the agency supervisor.

Obtain and fill out the necessary paperwork

Forms:

  1. Bring the name, address, and phone number of your Agency Supervisor, agency name, your health insurance policy number and expiration date.
  2. If you will have another job during your internship, you must have a Work Agreement signed by your Agency Supervisor and return it to our office.

Academic Registration:

  1. The internship course can only be added by add card. The add card is signed only after all paperwork is completed. Plan accordingly.
  2. Full-time students: be sure the internship credits you are requesting will not put you above 18 credits/semester (9 credits/term) limit.
